We homeschool year-round so we always plan out our summer work & field trips.
This year, school year 2022-23 was hard. My dad passed away during the summer 2022, so I was grieving during the first few months of the school year. My husband retired from the military during the summer as well. Despite our best laid plans, homeschooling with him at home was a struggle. I don't think he meant to be in the way, but he was. He also envisioned "school at home" for the kids when I actually home school and it looks nothing like public school. He tried to tell me how I could do things "better." The poor guy...he had the best of intentions, but again, it was a struggle. (I'd heard homeschool mammas say it was hard on days dad was home. They weren't kidding! lol) Anyway, we did the best we could and we met our state requirements, but we didn't get all of our curricula finished, so we will be continuing some of it this summer.
Mathematics - Math Mammoth
“It is mastery-oriented, and focuses on conceptual understanding. Mental math and number sense are emphasized." (Math Mammoth website)
We got a late start with Math Mammoth our first year because the printing company we sent it to scammed numerous homeschool families out of money for products that never arrived. The kids have nearly caught up after that fiasco but still have a bit of work left in their books from this year. We do math year-round to prevent back sliding so as soon as they finish these current levels, they will move on to the next ones.
History - Story of the World, Volume 2
"The Story of the World is an award-winning resource for families looking for a history curriculum they can fall in love with. Told in the straightforward, engaging style that has become Susan Wise Bauer's trademark, this four-volume set covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the present." (Well-Trained Mind website)
The kids absolutely love The Story of the World books. We read the story, do the activities, and then do additional research on each topic. Unfortunately we haven't has as much time as we would have liked to deep dive into history this year, so we hope to spend a great deal of our time this summer finishing SOTW Volume 2.
We don't currently have any time away from home planned, but as the summer progresses, it's likely we will jump in the car and take a field trip or two. For now though, we are going to focus on finishing curricula and getting ready for the next school year that starts July 1.
Until next time,
