Hands-on "The Wizard of Oz" activity

The creativity inspired by Blossom & Root Year 2 Language Arts.

Literature Project: Exploring the Story

The Blossom and Root Year 2 Language Arts includes The Wizard of Oz as a read-aloud. The literature project included making peg dolls for the main characters. The curriculum says, "Take your time, make them together, and enjoy the process." The kids and I took that advice to heart. We spent a lot of time on their dolls. You can see them below. That lion's mane was a real doozy to make.

After completing their dolls and the story, the kids decided to imitate various "scenes" in the book. They used their imaginations to create the scenes and everything in our home was up for grabs as a prop or character.

Dorothy met the Munchkins who only wore clothing in shades of blue. The kids cast their old alphabet dolls as Munchkins. They used one of their Cherokee cabins as Dorothy's house. LOL Doll shoes filled in as the witch's boots. Play silks became the ground and background.

Dorothy with her faithful companion, Toto, met the Scarecrow as they traveled the yellow "play silk" road.

Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow met the Tin Woodsman as they traveled toward Emerald City.

Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodsman met the Lion along the Yellow "brick" road.

The Scarecrow was rescued by a blue felt bird who substituted for the "large heron." A piece of cardboard became a raft and Popsicle sticks served as oars. A blue play silk became a river.

The mice, played by colorful mini pom poms, pulled the lion out of the red play silk poppy field to safety.

The travelers spoke to the Wizard of Oz at Emerald City. An old green peg doll played the wizard. A doll house chair became his throne.

I'm embarrassed to admit I almost skipped this book. I never read it as a child, but I absolutely hated the movie. Those flying monkeys terrified me. Still, I trust Kristina, the creator of the Blossom and Root curriculum, so I decided to read it with the kids. I'm glad I did because their imaginations came alive and they thoroughly enjoyed the book. I can't wait until another book captures their attention like The Wizard of Oz did.

Until next time,
